Jonathan Spain is a freelance writer on fruit and vegetable growing, allotment issues and self sufficiency. He also works locally as a part time gardener, and has practical experience in setting up and maintaining kitchen gardens.

He is the founding secretary of the Haslingfield Allotment Gardeners Association. He has acted as a mentor to various local groups seeking to set up allotments. He has worked on allotments since helping his parents as a teenager in the mid 1970s.

He also researches and writes on the history of the Upper Cam valley and other historical subjects.
